First, try the RESTORE feature. Go to START, then PROGRAMS, pick Accessories then the System Tools section. Click on RESTORE. Go back a few weeks. This might do the trick.
Then try Ad-aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy from www.download.com. If this works, you might be OK.
If you have a CD BURNER, then start using it. I recommend that you use CD-R media to make a permanent backup.
Go to the Start menu, and programs. Go to Accessories, then System tools and pick BACKUP.
You want to backup your folder set under the C drive, "Documents and Settings". This will get everything.
Use the RESTORE disk that came with your computer. If you do not have a disk, then buy one. But don't buy the Windows XP upgrade. You need to start from Scratch.
When you get your system good again, get Ad-aware and SpyBot Search & Destroy. Use these IMMEDIATELY after any pop-up window occurs, or at least once a week. Make sure that your Anti-virus software is working.

Create a partition, format it in ntfs and put all your data you want to save there. Then reinstall XP on the partition it was running.
To remove spyware try add-aware software from lavasoft, or spysweeper!
You don't have to reinstal xp to have a genuine one. To validate xp, and receive a license for it you just have to buy a cd key and then an activation code! (Well in case you're not sure if the xp pack you've installed is the corect one, you should consider buyin gthe whole package ).
