When I was in Japan a couple months ago I noticed that the Japanese in general are quite fascinated with American pop culture. Disney is also immensely popular over there. My theory is that people are always attracted to what's different (US kids are into anime and American women swoon over British accents etc). It's no different there.

In Harajuku I visited a wonderful store called Snoopytown. We need one of those in the US!

I don't think it's just Japan. In Turkey (where I live) Peanusts comics are known as 'Snoopy' - everybody thinks Charlie Brown is just a minor character...

Peanuts is old hat in the U.S., but in places like Japan it's still new and interesting. The Japanese like cute things as a large majority, and it's generally known that a dog = cute, a small dog = cuter, and a small dog with a personality = the best thing to ever come out of life.
