What do you propose we should call them? Builtings? This is logical, but would probably evolve into the word buildings as the 'd' sound is softer and easier to say than the 't' sound.
And to Samz: Square boxes are easier to make and cheaper to transport (they tesselate, so less gaps and less empty space in lorries etc)
