The time is now, don't wait! Stretch marks are literally caused by stretching of the skin. They occur when the maximum elasticity has been reached. The best thing to do is use lots of lotion and cocoa butter. Use it as often as you remember! It will soften the skin and allow it to stretch easier. However, some stretch marks will probably occur, and you cannot get rid of current stretch marks. They will fade with time, but will always be slightly darker and silvery.
No matter what is marketed, there is no way to get rid of stretch marks. They used to say cocoa butter did this, but it does not.

The method: Mederma ointment
What it's good for: Smaller scars and new stretch marks
How it works: Mederma uses an ingredient derived from onion skins to help treat scar height and discoloration. Its manufacturer claims it will soften hardened scar tissue, too. Mederma comes in a gel formula, so you can apply during the day and no one has to know. Visible results, however, can take awhile to show up.

Keeping the skin well moisturized and pliant is the best defence.
Coconut oil cream will help soften the skin and minimize stretch marks, and remember, they will fade a lot eventually.

I wish my stretchmarks came from pregnancy!! Unfortunately I've just got'em anyway .... and after years and lots of weight loss, they've faded a lot but I've still got them. I've learned to live with them.
However!! I've heard that rubbing pure aloe vera oil or Vitamin E cream directly onto the stretchmarks, every day after your shower (and frankly any other time you feel like it) can help reduce the redness of them. It won't make them disappear completely, but it will keep them minimal. And of course, the rest of your skin will be smooth as a baby's bottom :)
Hope your pregnancy's going well.
