Competition in today's job market is tough. Typically 200 responses are being received per advertisement placed and therefore your CV needs to stand out from the rest.
On average a Curriculum Vitae will receive no more than 30 seconds initial consideration. In that time it needs to make an impact.
The best is that you get it done professionally. My friend got his CV done by professionals and he got a job teaching English at a Korean university. The best thing about this story is that he is a cook.

There is no ideal format per se, because it depends on how far are you along the working experience curve. Under no condition should the CV be more than 2 pages
The header of any CV must include the necessary data (name, etc, see the answer above).
However, what comes next depends on you.
I advise the following:
1) short sentence of your motivation
"I am biology studies graduate interested in research in applied genetics.... "
2) depending on what you experience and work you are applying for is:
a) you are graduating and applying for a relevant position:
studies
work experience, if any
positions of responsibility
skills and languages
interests/hobbys
references
b) you have some work experience, which is more relevant than your studies
work experience with emphasis on skills developed and achievements
positions of responsibility
short - studies
skills/languages
hobbies/interests
references
c) you work experience/ education are hardly relevant for the position
skills + languages
achievements
work experience
positions of responsibiliy
studies (here position of studies and work experience varies in relation to what is comparatively more relevant)
references

Follow KISS - Keep It Short & Sweet (max 2 pages, pref 1 if for western recruiter, unless you have more than 5yrs of experience)
A) Open with your Name and Contact details
B) Objective (very important. this is used often as a filtering mechanism)
C) If you have more than 3 years of work experience after college, then put your work experience details. Start with the current job, and move progressively to the first. Detail your job responsibilities, then your special achievements in each job. Follow this with your educational qualifications.
D) If less than 3 years, put your educational qualifications up front with the last degree first and move to the first one. Follow this with work experience.
E) Now detail all the trainings attended, papers presented, relevant extra curricular activities etc etc without making it a composition.
F) Finally mention marital status and languages learnt (if relevant).
Most importantly, keep in mind that there is no set formula for the perfect cv and you need to be careful with your words and spellings (observe the title of this question). Customise your objective for each job you apply for and differentiate between a CV and a Resume.

1. NAME, ADDRESS, CONTACT INFO
2. PERSONAL PROFILE - 7 TO 8 SENTENCES ABOUT YOU
3. SKILLS & ABILITIES - 6-7 ITEMS WITH BULLET POINTS IN BRIEF
4. EMPLOYMENT HISTORY
5.EDUCATION & QUALIFICATIONS
6. TRAINING
7. HOBBIES & INTERESTS
THE CV SHD BE OF 1 PAGE & MAX OF 2 PAGES. THERE SHD NOT BE THE WORD CV, RESUME OR BIO DATA USED ON THE TOP. THE FORMAT ITSELF SHD SPK OUT THAT IT'S YR CV.
