Hewlett-Packard, a company best known for its printers and scanners, was started back in the 1930's by William Hewlett and David Packard. The company is the quintessential garage start-up company that initially made testing and monitoring equipment. Fans of the Walt Disney motion picture Fantasia may be interested to know that segment of the film that showed a visual representation of sound was accomplished with the use of an oscilloscope made by HP. A few years ago HP bought Compaq, one of the first successful makers of PC-compatible systems.
