May be you'r using yahoo messenger beta version because beta versions have [p]roblems and that's common even i use i need to try at least thrice and at maximum 7 ot 8 times..... but in yahoo messenger you can do it directly... at once if your password gets correct... lol

You must be behind proxy server or firewall. Please check with your administrator or Internet service provider for the same. If any chance you discover that you are behind proxy server, please go to connection preferences in yahoo messenger and enable the use HTTP proxy. Enter the Proxy Server Name and the HTTP Port address. I think that will help you.

More than likely it's because you have a firewall that's blocking it...go into your firewall settings and make a rule to allow it...this is especially true with Norton...

Probably got it configured wrong!
Check out your setup, and also make sure your firewall allows it to access net otherwise it won't work.
