When using Yahoo Messenger, you can only send messages to other Yahoo messenger users. The same with AOL Instant Messanger and MSN.
But... I use a program called Trillian from Cerulean Studios which allows you to send to anyone on these networks and others. There is a free version of the program available at http://www.ceruleanstudios.com .
Basically, this is a single IM program that replaces Yahoo, MSN, AOL, IRC and others and displays all users in a single windows. Plus, it has no ads. I love it and have been using it for about 2 years now. Go get it!

Well, there are different kinds of messengers. Yahoo messenger supports yahoo ids and SBC Yahoo (now AT&T Yahoo IDS). There is also AIM (which supports AOL screen names). Both of these are downloadable.
Other messengers include IMVU, ICQ, MSN and more.
All of the above mentioned are downloadable for free and an account can be created to talk to people on them. If you would like to talk to someone ask them what messenger they use, download it yourself and create an account. Or ask them to download yahoo and create an account.

With Yahoo Messenger, yes. Download a multiple IM like Trillian and you can sign on to several differnt IMs at once and chat away.
