water tends to flow down hill due to gravity until it reaches the lowest point at which gravity can no longer effect it. For most water that is the ocean but not for all. Some flows into the great salt lake in Utah from which there is no outlet. Other to the Salton Sea or the Dead Sea or the Caspian Sea. All rivers do not flow in the same direction. Some flow north as Lena of Siberia and the Nile of Africa. Some flow east as the Amazon. Some flow south as the Mississippi. And some flow west as the Columbia and all other directions of the compass

Just to clarify this for you...99% of all waters flow towards a larger body of water...typically rivers flow to the south...but there is one river in the United states that flows in the opposite direction and that is the New River which flows through the eastern states..Virginia, West Virginia, and a few others...It has a northernly flow...Check it out..Its true!!!

Water follows gravity. Every continent has a divide. That is the highest point where every thing goes down hill. In the USA it is the Rockies. Water that hits the top will roll one way or the other.

Water also follows the path of least resistance. It will go around whatever is in it's way.

Hope it helps.
