I live in Smethwick (just outside of Birmingham) and for the most part the police are brilliant, but I have seen them drive past gangs fighting on the street more than once. When my neighbour was beating up his wife it took them over an hour to respond and when I was punched in the face by a drunk at 10pm they didn't get to my house until 2am.

I'm from Australia and I absolutely trust the policemen (cops, pigs, po-pos) but why on earth wouldn't I? I'm white, middle class female with a good education who doesn't break the law. I don't attract attention. If I were a different ethnicity my answer would probably be different. Everything's relative to the person, not the policeman.

I believe they can be walking timebombs if they are biggots wielding too much power and use their position to make a point. My husband gets stopped all the time because he drives a Caddy with rims. For some reason, they always think he is up to something bad. It is really just an infringement on our rights. Racial profilling is not reason enough to search our vehicle. But there are some good ones far and few between that want to protect the public. I don't trust them personally, because of my experiences with them.

In Ireland, Police are called the Gardai (or Garda in singular).
It's one of the only things that we say in Irish.
They play no big part in society so we do trust them and there's no slang name.

NO! I was involved in a simple accident and the officer took a telephone call as an eye witness report, when he only repeated what the person who hit me told him.
