First, humans did not evolve from monkeys.

Humans and apes had a common ancestor millions of years ago. From that point, our ape-like ancestors evolved into the species we are today. Chimps, gorillas, and orangutangs evolved into what they are today over millions of years as well.

Secondly, monkeys are not apes. Although, apes and monkeys probably have a common ancestor somewhere down the line. The key difference between a monkey and an ape, is that monkey's have tails.

Thirdly, monkeys don't evolve into people because they've evolved into forms that are well adapted to their specific environments.

Humans just hit the evolutionary lottery, capitalized on it, and here we are. It took millions of years though.

evolution doesn't mean that all the species turned into another, it's like some of a species was subjected to other environmental conditions that required some change in the way it even grow to adapt to the new conditions and so on, and these changes are stored in the DNA and passed on to the next generation for farther modifications if needed, but such change doesn't occur in a year or two, but over hundreds of thousands of years...
so if you talk about monkeys, there are loads of monkey species and that's because of the difference in the environmental conditions they live in, same thing happened with humans, as they evolved from apes (not monkeys by the way) and that basically came with the evolution of the brains to suit different habitats, and the most important step of brain evolution was the use of tools for eating and then hunting for what to eat...

you see the thing is monkeys have different varieties, there are all kinds of them living in different parts of the world and adopted depending on their own environment.
our ancestors did look similar to monkeys. they had to evolve because at that time the African rain forests were gradually turning into today's Africa, dry and worm. so the reason monkey don't evolve into humans is because they don't have to, they are doing fine in their own environment. the only monkey that did evolve into our own ancestors were the one that lived in Africa. we only have one direct ancestor, the ones that that were further down the line may evolved into other species, much of them got extinct others survived. its possible that chimps and apes came from the same ancestor as we did, perhaps the struggle of being a human was greater than being a chimp or an ape that's why we had to develop an intelligent which would allow us to make tools for hunting and defending our selves from species of the higher food chain.
the moneys that live in Africa today are living on plants and vegetable, animals that eat meat are more intelligent than those eating plants, perhaps that's another reason to why monkeys wont evolve into humans.

Judging by that question....are you sure that we haven't....or some of us....
School was very boring I know, but think about the fact that monkeys are not apes and humans did not evolve from monkeys at all.
But given the change in climate who knows what humans will have to adapt to and evolve into.
Think about it and maybe set foot into a library, why don't you.
Sending you love and blessings.

Monkeys did not evolve to human beings, or rather, a monkey didn;t wake up 6 million years ago and start talking. Eventual mutations in the primate genome led to the human. If you can mutate a monkey's genome in the correct sequence, then you can make a man out of George.

Darwin never really claimed that humans descended from apes.

If you've read a back issue of National Geographic Nov 2004 (I happen to be reading it now...), there are interesting theories of evolution.

I for one don't agree that humans were apes once upon a time, we all know how Adam came into being but never the less I agree that evolution exists; in respect of lesser creatures called animals.

Although it takes hundreds of thousands of years for most creatures to evolve, bacterias and viruses, even smaller insects like mosquitoes do not wait very long to evolve - the very reason why our scientists and doctors are kept busy in their labs coming up with the latest anti-biotics/antivirus drugs to help us all...

SO to answer you... I don't think we'll ever be apes, or monkeys

A very good question. And one that can only be answered by referring to the leading authority on the evolution of primates, monkeys, humans and all subject matter relating to this area.

You see, if you had watched 'Planet of the Apes', you would know that apes will indeed evolve to stages of intelligence as advanced, if not more advanced than humans, as a result of labratory experiments done on a space ship that gets catapulted forwards in time by a space anomaly.

Further information on the subject can be obtained from your local Blockbusters. Don't bother with the library. They're boring and they won't let you eat popcorn.

Interesting subject !
i reckon many of the guys here hit the nail on the button - evolution.
Should we take a group of monkeys and keep them away from trees and their natural food, for say , 1000 years, this specific group of monkeys would evolve or change to suit their new environment, for instance if they walked all over, the characteristics of their feet would change and probably look like ours.Should their lifestyle be similar to ours, for many years, i think the monkeys would attain many more of our features.
Imagine if a male and female of our species take to the trees, and only live in the trees for 1000 years, how would their offspring look in 1000 years time ?

Good question! I could try to be a wise guy and say that the conditions changed, but then I would have to come up with an answer to why we kept on changing when they didn't, or why we didn't change back when the conditions changed. But let's overlook such embarrassing details! I suspect that the person who was making us carefully selected a couple of individuals from the general population and performed his experiments on them, leaving the rest of the monkeys alone.

Do youy understand how long evolution takes? It's millions of years to move a tendon, just a little over there. And the monkeys and chimps we currently have, have followed the evolutionary path, reacting to their environment for millennia. Just because there are now a load of SUV's in Africa, the chimps aren't going to rapidly react and start making driving gloves.
