One reason for the apparent peacefulness within the communist world was the nature of the USSR, attacks by member states against the central power was seen as rebellion rather than war as the eastern bloc states had little or no soverignty. Also this has much to do with the nature of the Cold War, it was never in the intrest of the USSR to attack another communist state as its chief objective was victory of the US, had they survived the cold war we might well have seen some form of conflict with another communist state,

Of course Communist nations go to war, Democracies go to war as well. It doesnt matter what ideological system you believe, their will never be an 'unconditional peace' between them. Of course Democracies will wage war, the very first Democracies were at constant war! (Ancient Hellenistic Greece etc)
