.In 1963, Carrefour invented the hypermarket1 concept and opened the first store of this type in France. Carrefour now serves more than 2 billion clients per year in its more than 9,000 stores, which are present in more than 26 countries spread across 3 geographic zones. The supermarket chain employs more than 240 thousands2 people. The group also operates, directly or via franchise. There are 1078 supermarkets under the signs of Champion, Stock, and Marché Plus. Moreover, Carrefour has 1672 neighborhood stores operating under the signs Shopi, 8 à huit, Maxi Plus and Comod, and 160 cash & carry outlets under the signs Promocash and Prodirest. It also has 8% the costumers, in contrast to the owners of small grocery shops. Those people completely disapprove of such activity. Many fear the possibility of being expelled from the market simply because of the price difference. Huge and prosperous hypermarkets are able to purchase more units of one product and gain satisfying price discounts, selling the products at very low prices, or even dumping prices. Moreover, in some countries, such as Poland, they are being built almost in the center of the city, not on the outskirts, as it should be. It is obvious that in such situation, as inevitably happens, only sparse enterprising and inventive owners of small grocery shops will remain in the market9.

This is a question that can never be answered except by a Carrefour executive but i can give you a good enough guess.

- Peneteration of developing markets in africa and the middle east where they are now the pinoeer of the hyper market segment due to the absence of large retailers

- Sell a lot at cheap rates to gain million of loyal customers and establish a shopping habit

- Own brands to compliment the protfolio of consumer goods, sold at discounted rates due to bulk buying from manufacturers

- Outlets are designed for a family experience. Women can bring their kids and men can sit and have a cup of coffee while their wives shop, thus enhancing the shopping experience for all the customers.

- Advertising revloves around generous offers and bargains that attract the masses.

Hope the above helps
