Venus is the closest planet to Earth. Venus is 26 million miles away from Earth. The distance between Earth and Mars is 36 million miles. So Venus is closest not Mars!

Venus. Its closer because its the first planet that probes were sent to. The russians were ahead of us in the space race at this point and we were praying for russian failure. We are lucky that venus's atmosphere is enough to melt a car in like 1 minute and crush a person instantly. the first 2 probes didnt make it to the ground and the 3rd was operational for about 30 seconds then it died.

It depends when you ask the question.
Its either Venus or Mars depending on where each planet is in its orbit. (eg if Venus is on the far side of the Sun to us and Mars is on the same side, odds on its Mars and vice versa).
