I don't. Personally, I think that they outlived their usefulness about three decades ago. Now it seems that their sole purpose is to uphold the wants-needs of one person, while trampling on the rights of everyone else. And usually over absolutely ludicrous issues.
Ex.: In my area, a kid was waving around a piece of paper with the Confederate flag on it at the school lunch table. Principal came by, told him to put it away. He refused. He was suspended.
What should have ended right there made the newspapers, because his mother raised hell and got the ACLU involved. That's just asinine, as far as I'm concerned.
My mother would have raised hell, too- but with me or one of my brothers if we had pulled a stunt like that.

The ACLU has gotten a LOT of bad press lately, and people have a limited view of what they do. They are dedicated to upholding personal freedom and defending the US constitution. This means they tend to fall on both sides of the Republican/ Democrat barrier. Truly, the ACLU doesn't favor either political party and has never in its 85 year history endorsed any candidate for any election. It's true that the ACLU defends child molesters in court, fights against school mandated prayer, and has fought against the Bush administration on many policy issues. Here's a few examples of recent ACLU legal actions that you probably haven't heard about:
Defended a 2nd grade student's right to sing a religious song at a school talent show. School officials had told the girl that she could not sing the song, because of its religious content.
Filed suit against a Georgia county for denying a zoning ordinance to a Baptist church.
Defended a high school student's right to display an American flag on her backpack.
Has defended the rights of people, businesses, and cities to display the Confederate flag.
Has successfully challenged mandatory fees in public schools.
Has defended the right of anti-gay demonstrators to protest in public areas and on university campuses.
To answer your question, I guess some people like the ACLU because they'll fight for ANYONE's rights, regardless of what they've done or what their political views are.

They balance out what the Religious Nuts in this country are trying to do. Unfortunately, some people don't know how to seperate church and state, so you need some organization to go out there and set them straight. Thus, the ACLU was created.
If people would learn to just get along, and honor each other's differences, instead of trying to Christianize America, we would have peace. It all comes down to control and fear. If Christians can't control you, they fear you for your differences. They'd rather put up a fight instead of trying to understand and love you for the individual you are. The only way to peace is for people to start thinking outside the box.

They protect the rights of the average citizens in this country. Without them the constitution would not mean much to the people that would ignor it. Basic rights like freedom to choose the religion or lack of would be gone, freedom to express oneself as we wish gone. While this is viewed as left wing it really isn't, it is for the good of all people as when any right erodes it leaves other open to attack and while the do not always do what is popular the do what is right.

Because they are most likely liberal and deny the fact that the ACLU is a radical communist group of athiests seeking to undermine the American social fabric and undermine our security. Especially, when they partner with CAIR. Both need to be rooted out. Strongly censured.

Some do, some don't. The ACLU likes to pick and chose what rights are worth fighting for. I think all rights are worth fighting for. They are opposed to the "right to bear arms" for example, and for gun control. Some of their views can be considered anti-Christian. I, personally, don't put much faith in them as "protectors of civil rights" which they claim to be.
