Yes. But the same can be said for any piece of software... computers have a nasty habit of being messed up.
A couple things to keep in mind:
BitTorrent is a protocol. The official client also goes by the name BitTorrent, but a protocol can't hurt you. I don't know of any major problems with the official bittorrent client.
That said, what you download is up to you. If you torrent things from places you don't trust, or if you torrent down movies, music or other possibly illegal things, you're running the risk that you'll pick up viruses or spyware. There's no difference between bittorrent and any other P2P or browser software in this regard. Be smart about what you're downloading, run a virus scanner and run antispyware tools every once in a while.

No, nothing happened to my notebook. Even right now also, i'm downloading movie on it. Dont download something if the health indicator is red or orange in colour. Download those files which are green in colour. I'm using Celeron (1.4Ghz) but i dont have any problem. Ya, initially it badly affected my internet speed as i cant open a single website if bitcomet is running but now its not a problem anymore. Also, uninstall all the programs that u dont use at all. It will speed up ur pc's processes.

Sure. Any time you use any type of p2p client, you never know for sure what you're getting. Torrents were pretty safe early on, but that's no longer the case.
The Bit Torrent software itself is benign, but the files you download with it are not necessarily safe.
