of course, that's wise, if lightining strikes and affect a phone line near you, your modem might suffer, who knows what else can happen. Maybe you should turn OFF your TV and cellphone, too.

Yes.
If lightening strikes overhead power lines it sends a current surge into your computer. This will sometimes blow the power supply. This has happened to me a couple of times in the past five years.
Note that modern PCs don't actually turn off when they power down. To be really sure (if a bit paranoid) your should pull the plug from the outlet during electrical storms.

To be completely safe when lightning is in the area, you need to pull the plug on your computer and disconnect any phone lines or network connections.
Surge supressors or battery backup units will help but they will NOT protect you against a close-in hit.
My cable TV line took a hit last week, right in my back yard in Joplin. It took out one NIC in my firewall, a switch, my wireless access point, and a NIC on one of the PCs on my home network. I had a surge supressor on the cable line but it didn't help much...

It is safer and it would be even more safe to pull the plug out of the wall. Lightning doesn't strike computers often but it has happened and probably will again.

Probably if you have a surge protector or battery backup, you'll be alright. If you're plugged directly into the wall, you might want to shut down if it gets bad.

i would advice as a sudden shut off can occur and create a power failure of your system. Then you will have to replace your power unit inside and see if your data was not lost. Sometimes it can just really mess up your motherboard.

It wont do much good if you dont unplug it and disconnect from the internet.....electricity will find its way through your computer anyway unless you meet all these requirements!
