Erection is a physiological process controlled by various neuroendocrinal and autonomic body function. It is controlled by parasympathetic nervous system which lead to vasodilation in vessels of corpora cavernosa that results in blood pooling in penis and hence produce erection. It is misconception that it occurs only during sexual arousal.its important for sexual functioning hence limbic system of brain do causes cascade of Nero endocrine changes to cause erection.limbic system may be activated by visual, auditory, touch sensation, smell or even just thought related to sexual feeling.but it can also occur without limbic system involvement(without sexual feeling) as it may be purely neural response.best example i can give is during REM sleep(dreamy sleep) or seizure activity.this is because of excessive autonomic neural discharges.special mention about pathological erection which is difficult to reversible is essential. it is usually due to vessels obstruction best example for it is sickle cell anaemia.

First of all, how does it erect? The penis is composed of two spongy muscles that has coiled blood capillaries, they are bulbospongiosus muscles. These muscles are covered by fascia. Fascia is like a real tight plastic bag that covers around the muscle. if the penis is flacid (not erect), this is normal because the blood capillaries is not fully filled. When erection, the blood rushed to the capillaries, as the blood couldn't get out at the short time, so it penis erects (longer and harder). Justt imagine you have a plastic bag that is durable to high pressure, put sponge of the same size into it. This is flacid, then fill water into the sponge as not to let the water out of the plastic bag. It'll become longer, thicker and harder! Viola, you have got an artificial eraction!
Back to your Q, erection is a physiological reaction. It is controlled by mind (S3X) and autonomic nervous system, parasympathetic to be exact. So, it is normal for a boy to erect without thinking of sex. this could be triggered by his parasympathetic nervous system. Other way to make it erect is cold. because cold causes vasoconstriction (the blood vessels will become smaller in diameter). As it is having vasoconstriction, then, the blood will become relatively fully filled the vessels, thus ERECTION!

:-D It's a completely involuntary response. The neurological response is built in from birth. When the nerves down there sense a stimulus, the brain's response is to tell a (I forget the name) valve to open, letting blood flow to the penis. This causes the reaction we know of as an erection.

When young that penis just is not going to be controlled by your mind. Actually it tends to be in control. I remember when a teen and wanted to jump anything female that got near me. I would beat it and in a few minutes it was ready again nd I thought I would never be able to find the girl that could tame it. Just part of being young.
