When my Mom plants them, she plants pointy side down. :-))
She leaves at least 1/4 to 1/3 of the seed exposed, above the dirt, too.
She has great success, always gets a nice leafy plant.
Sometimes she starts them in water, too, as previously described, using toothpicks. Then when they have some roots, she plants them in potting soil.

I HAVE 104 MATURE FUERTE AVOCADO TREES. trust me, the pointy bit points UP. also trust me, if you are growing it for fruit, forget it. all the fruit you buy at the store is grown on grafted root stock. the stone when planted will not give you anything that looked or tasted like the fruit you removed it from. planted it will produce an entirely different fruit. but if you just want a cool looking house plant go for it. the stones are fun to watch grow.

The first three answers are totaly wrong.Pointy side up!I have growen them before. They are pretty hard to start.I usually start them in a glass of water with tooth pics on each side to suspend the seed on the glass and fill the glass so the bottom of the seed is in the water.Change the water once a week.Good luck.

If you look at the pit, there's a light tan colored circle on the wider part of the pit. This is the part that goes in the water.
If you put it the other way, the pit is upside down.
