we're trying to do a simulation of a DoS attack on a LAN, preferably one that simulates an attack for port 80 or port 8080...need some ideas on how to do this...thanks in advance

this will be conducted in a laboratory of about 10 computers and we're trying find out what & how a DoS attack really looks & feels like...don't worry guys, this has no 'hidden agenda'....

...as i have said earlier, this is to simulate a DoS attack in a LAN...only a simulation in a peer-to-peer network of about 10 computers, not hooked up to an internet connection whatsoever....

Tear down the firewall protecting the LAN and make sure the HTTP standard ports are open. Make sure the secure ports are open, too. Hell... open every port. :-p

I should warn you, though... I asked a question pretty similar to this one... and Yahoo! took it down, accusing me of sh*t. Whateva, I say. As long as this is for educational purposes... I don't mind one bit.

Make sure you know the necessary algorithms and have the necessary software to perform the DoS attack. I won't supply you with THAT information. ;-)

But make sure all ports are open. Port 8080 is a little difficult to do with standard HTTP protocols under web browsers. If using a web browser, stick with port 80. If using a remote program, 8080 can be achieved by opening its port first.

The best 'simulation' is an actual attack. Depending on the style of DoS you're going for, this may mean that you send one packet, or that you flood your poor network, but I suggest running a real attack in a controlled environment rather than trying to make something look like an attack.

You will, of course, need to work out the details of your attack yourself. Once you do there's nothing special about a LAN in this case... you attack the target from your source machine, and probably record the traffic and logs on the target to study later.

Please don't run DoS attacks on anything outside your network. I mean no offense, but if you're asking this question you're just going to get yourself in trouble if you start hitting other people's boxes now.

what's LAN
if it is the windows thing, then go to run, type in cmd, and find a code that loops itself, looking like a virus
