Society is a collection of "Humans" and humans have different kinds of cultural, educational, social, infrastructual back grounds. Enormous examples can be quoted where the childern of same parents, brought up in similar conditions, environemts, and socio-economic norms have behaved differently when put in same kind of a test. So its not that every one in a society will act in similar fashion. The biggest virtue of Human beings is their "unpredictivity". You never know, who will act how in a given situation and this makes "human beings" the most interesting creature ever created.
As far as the question is concerned, i would infact negate it completely (and its my personal opinion only). What most of the economists say is that "poverty is the mother of all evil". If one is poor, one can forgo one's ethics and norms to earn something to meet the two ends together. It is out of poverty that one gets ready to sell one's daughter so that one can feed other of one's offspring. Its poverty that makes us steal, tell lies, remain uneducated and/ or kill others. This is an overall view or general state and as I said above, human beings are the most unpredictable creature, there are exceptions where a poor may behave in the most decent manner but then, its not ONLY poverty but other external factors also ply in like his family back-ground, his broughtup and his society.
You cant label a society as moral or immoral because these terms are again relative to other factors. May be in my society drinking is moral but in another society its highly immoral, in one society, if a lady is lying naked on a beach taking sun bath; is acceptable in one society but is immoral for another. So morality cant be taken independently, we have to consider other factors with it also.
If by morality, you mean the daily crime, this again does not hold good for developed countries as enforcement of law in such countries is far effective than in underdeveloped countries.
The summary to this discussion is that - Its not a society as a whole that is moral or immoral, its the individuals within a society who have such traits (with exceptions present, everywhere).

I hate to group everybody in the same basket. Some people in developed nations are materialistic and have loose morals, some are very spiritual and have strict morals. This is the same for people in developing nations. It is not fair to generalise.
