Legally, someone born in another country cannot run for President of the US.

Article I of the U.S. Constitution states president must be native born US citizen. Sorry Arnold S.

Yes, I would vote for him or her. A foreign born can provide a outsider view of the state of our union. A foreign born can love this country more than a native born. And why not? Arnold, the terminator!

Since we are talking hypothetical, yeah, I would consider a foreign-born president if the person had been a US citizen for many years. How many is many? Let's say 20 years....that's an arbitrary number but it seems about right. It would give him/her plenty of time to establish a track record of beliefs and accomplishments from which we could evaluate the person as a potential candidate. These days, I'm sorry to say, but many of our foreign-born citizens are better Americans than our native born.

It's anti-constitutional.Yes!But there are proposals for a law which allows Naturalized citizens to stand for elections after staying for a period of 20 years. All depends on the oh so great and scandalous Senate! As of voting, depends on the merit of the individual.E.g Henry Kissinger ,an amazing politician could not be the president because he was not American born-citizen inspite of breaking the Chinese communist political barrier. So all depends the person's merit. But I do think if the person is really meritorious. It will be a pleasure to vote for him ,because merit is merit and not voting for him will be injustice.

It's a moot issue. It's against the Constitution!

The constitution isn't going to be changed in that respect, and no I would not elect a foreign born citizen except those who were born overseas as US citizens.

Why is simple, I don't have a clue how that persons brain would work and most people would question where their real loyalty lies.

You have to remember that we took US citizens that were born in the US and carted them off to concentration camps during WWII, just because they had Japanese ancestry. We didn't do it to the Germans!

The constitution clearly states that only a natural born citizen of the US can become president.

only way a foreign born person could be considered for president is to have the constitution changed

This seems like a waste because we have great leaders and minds already in our country....thats like importing pineapples to hawaii. So no...theres no reason.

This is a realistic and great question and relevant.

Orin Hatch wants Arnold Swacharwhatever to be president so bad he tried to get an amendment to constituion to make a forienger who has lived in the US for more than 20 years eligible...
They feel his star power could win them the whitehouse, even though he is worthless to California

No. Divided loyalties.

Wouldn't a person be slightly loyal to their old country? Would they be tempted to favor legislation that may benefit their old country over the good of the majority of US citizens? Like trade agreements, deployment of troops to protect their old country, immigration law?

So, no. I wouldn't vote for a foreign born.
