The Caspian or Persian tiger (Panthera tigris virgata) was a subspecies that ranged throughout Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, Pakistan, the former Soviet Union and Turkey. It became extinct in the late 1960s, last seen in 1968.

The last Caspian tiger in Iran (the former Persia) was shot in 1958.

So yes, there was once such a thing as a Persian tiger, but they are now extinct.

Two other subspecies of tigers (the Balinese and Javan tiger) have also gone extinct, the Balinese in 1937 and the Javan in 1979.

The remaining six subspecies are all listed as Critically Endangered, and the entire species could easily be extinct within fifty years.
