Hormones. As to why their horny hormones spike during pregnancy, it's probably an evolved response to keep their mates from impregnating other females. If your wife/girlfriend is offering sex constantly, you're probably going to take her up on it. Even though the attraction would less because she's no longer fertile, being pregnant, the pleasure of the experience would probably have been enough to override the subconscious seed-spreading instinct. Also, increased mating increases the emotional bond, which is necessary if the pair is going to stay together long enough to raise the offspring to maturity.

Just because they are pregnant does not mean they will not get horny. Sometimes we have the urge to fool around and we act on what we feel ~

Cause it's an old wives tale and in this case the old wife wasn't lying. Just in case you are interested we tend to pretty Horny when we're menstruating as well. (What's a bit of blood between friends?)
