I have met some people from online and generally have to say it doesn't work well.
A while back I read about a study that broke down what happens in interpersonal communication. The study found that communication fell into three areas and the following breakdowns were seen:
1 Words used 6%
2. Tone of Voice 41%
3. Body Language 53%
I guess I believe now that if we are only communicating on such a low level (6%) when chatting or online in email there's no possible way to really have any idea what that other person is truly like.
Using the internet as a tool for staying in touch with people once met however is invaluable.

Im in an internet support group for people who have kids who have severe food allergies / intolerance and I have met some of them on several occasions. After chatting for some time it was fun to meet them. I have also had penfriends since I was a kid and met several of them over the years, it's great fun. Amazing to experience because you have an idea of them in your head but when you meet it can be quite different.
