There are many chatting protocols available out there!
You should ask specifically!
Most of the errors are caused by unavailable ports used by chatting software.

It depends on what network you want to chat in. I's recomend you use the IRC(Internet Relay Chat) net. To do so you need to download and install a program that can use that network like mIRC or Trillian. The first time you run these programs they will help you get started.
