"False Memory" by Dean Koontz. It's literally a roller-coaster ride of a novel, including mind-control, betrayal, brainwashing, a chilling protagonist, and a collection of innocent people struggling against a palpable evil that is intent on destroying their lives and minds. IT'S AMAZING.

Thrillers:
The John Sandford "Prey" series, starting with "Rules of Prey " and going to the most recent "Broken Prey" - Lucas Davenport is an interesting series character, and the series is a lot of fun. Read them in order though, Davenport goes through some changes throughout the series.
Sci-FI:
1) Stand on Zanzibar, by John Brunner - Hard to find, but it is a masterpiece of dystopian SF
2) Ilium, by Dan Simmons - Troy recast as SF; fascinating and superbly done.
3) Stranger in a Strange Land, by Robert Heinlein - You may love it, you may hate it, but it's the most important SF Novel of the last 50 years
4) The Forever War, by Joe Haldeman - If Tim O'Brien wrote SF, he'd have written this. Angry , moving, eloquent, it's a grunt's eye view of galactic conflict.
5) The Mote in God's Eye, by Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle - The GREAT first alien contact story
Mystery:
1) anything by Dashiell Hammet, Raymond Chandler, or P.D. James
Horror:
Carrion Comfort by Dan Simmons - psychic vampires and fabulous
Song of Kali by Dan Simmons - The "Heart of Darkness" of Horror novels - Harlan Ellison called it the greatest first novel ever written.

If u like good cop stories..I could recommend u the "In Death" Series by J.D Robb aka Nora Roberts. There are 21 books in this series so far the first Naked In Death and her most recent Memory In Death. Not a bad series even though I started in the middle and have been bouncing back and forth. James Patterson, Robin Cook, Dean R Koontz are in the thriller genre as well as mystery. Depending on ur taste, not too bad of authors.

I know a couple of people have suggested "The Da Vinci Code", but seriously...don't waste your time. It's mediocre, at best. If you're looking for something, fun, and kind of a guilty pleasure, maybe check out the Diana Gabaldon "Outlander" series. I keep finding them in the romance sections of certain stores, but it's not really in that genre. There's a lot of action, some sci-fi, and a romance intertwined. But the writing is pretty funny. Diana Gabaldon has a pretty good sense of humor and irony.
