The lowly transister. Yes, the solid state NPN (or PNP) device that opened the way to semi-condutors and replaced the tube based main frame computer and made it possible for computers to be in your house. The laser, which we now use to read CD and DVD disks, and don't even think that it didn't exist in the 50's.
