There are actually 2 suggestions regarding the long necks of giraffes. Originally, it was thought that their necks were long to eat off the tops of trees, which they do sometimes. However, a somewhat recent study reported that when there is a preference, giraffes will eat at the intermediates levels of trees instead. The second suggestion is in regards to sexual selection. This idea states that giraffes evolved long necks to be better at fighting in order to win over females. The giraffes that had the longest necks tended to win the male-male competitions and hence could reproduce more frequently.

Everyone thinks girrafes have long necks so that they can eat off of trees but thats not why. The use their long necks in mating. Males fight other males by wrapping their necks around another makes neck, they take eachother down like that.
