Common Salt (Sodium Chloride) is what's known as a drying agent. This means that it will absorb water and many other liquids. Because smails ( and slugs) are composed mainly of water, a small amount of salt can completely dry them out.

However, humans are mainly composed of water as well, so how come we don't dry ou with salt as well? The difference is that snails are covered a selectively permeable membrane, which lets through small molecules (like water), whereas we have a very thick skin which doesn't let through nearly the same amount of water as it does with snails and slugs.

By the way, it's SENSITIVE. And if you're asking why, it's because salt is more concentrated than the water in the body of the snail(which is very moist) and when the water concentration is lower on the outside, osmosis occur as water moves from a higher concentration of water to a lower concentration of water through a partially permeable membrane, the snail's skin. Thus, they are very sensitive to salt!!

When snails were still in school, they took part in a oratory contest, and was pitched against salt in the final round.

salt as we all know has impeccable logic and gets the message across lucidly in a stinging way. snails learnt their lesson after a bad thrashing and have been sensible to salt ever since.

oh and they can be sensitive too. so sensitive, they can die. like I guess you are sensitive to cyanide.

have a sensible day.

Snails according to taxonomy are grouped under the phylum molluscs. These are the soft bodied animals with shells. Their body is covered by mucin which is very sensitive to salt. Therefore, when you put salt on snails they die.

Snails are very moist; they are mostly water.

When you put salt on them, the salt absorbs the water in the snail, and the snail shrivels up and dies.
