thats kind of like asking what the best type of sandwich is, everyone is going to have an opinion, but it doesnt make it fact. but, in my opinion, i dont think anyone has anything over Randy Rhoads. he was just amazing and could do practically anything on the guitar. i wish i'd have been around to have seen him back in the day.

The major debate always seems to be between Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen, 'course Steven Vai, Slash, Vinny Vincent, Mick Mars and Randy Rhodes are among the greatest as well. There is no one answer because it all depends on style and opinion. As far as I know there is no standardized test for guitar greatness.

The best is possibly Django Reinheart. He inspired almost all of the above in one way or another. The best guitarist alive is Steve Vai.

Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani - there are many, though for sheer variety of styles I'd have to say Joe Satriani comes out top.
