Off the top of my head:

1. Sharia law puts women into a second class status. They are not even competent to be witnesses in court.

2. Sharia law puts non-muslims into second class status. Under Sharia law non-muslims have no inherent right to practice their religion. Their chuches and temples can be closed at any moment for no reason. Their children can be denied religious instruction and in some instances have been forcibly converted to Islam. And, like women, evidence from non-Muslims may be (and commonly is) totally disregarded by Sharia courts.

3. Sharia law makes conversion from Islam to another religion a death penalty offense for both the convert, the person who converted him or her, and anyone else involved.
3. A. It also makes the sale of land by a Muslim to a non-Muslin a death penalty offense.

4. Sharia law's penalties are best described as running from harsh to barberic. As noted, many offences against Islam are subject to the death penalty; other offenses are punished by "merely" maiming the defendant by chopping off a hand or a foot or blinding him.

5. Sharia law allows for persons other than the husband or wife to bring a divorce action on the "grounds" one of the spouses has committed "aposty", that is in the eyes of the third party has in some manner "offended" Islam.

6. Sharia law gives the sole right of divorce to the husband, and automactically awards the husband sole custody of the children.

7. When coupled with tribal traditions, Sharia courts have come up with such abominations as decreeing that a girl child be gang raped to punish her tribe for the voluntary sexual activity of one of her relatives with an adult member of another tribe.

8. Sharia law as currently practiced appears to approve of suicide bombers (at least when the targets are not Muslims).

9. Sharia law does not work well when applied to disputes arisinng from business transactions or intenational commerce. This is in part because Sharia law prohibits interest, and as noted above, does not give equal weight to evidence produced by non-Muslims.

If Islamic law was just obeyed by Muslims it wouldn't be a problem, but it becomes the country's law and affects those who aren't Muslims. No country should have laws based on religion since religion should be a personal choice.

As a Christian teacher, I've heard some of my students overgeneralize about all things Muslim. Even an Islamic law that promotes peace is suspicious from the start because it came from an Islamic source. I try to teach them to think critically enough to identify exactly what about Islam is right or wrong instead of overgeneralizing. Otherwise they'll end up "throwing out the baby with the bath water" by criticizing good laws and other good things.

Assuming you mean other religions that are practiced by people in democratic societies, i guess the answer would be that Islamic law is based on religion. A govenrment that is based on religion only doesn't seem to work very well. Look at the sunnis, shiites. Even a strict religious rule is eventually be broken into extrem, moderate and liberal, just like most political parties are. The difference is that, based on what I have seen in my lifetime is that if a person disobeys Islamic law, they are put to death. That kind of reasoning just doesn't wash. Why should somebody be forced to follow a religion that they don't believe in? Especially when the religion, be it Christian, Muslim, Hindu or any other, is really only based on myths passed down from generation to generation. There really is no proof of God, be it Muslim or Christian. It is a matter of personal beliefs, not something to force a person into believing. If Allah came down from the heavens, and I saw him, then I probably would believe and worship Allah. If God, came down from heaven, and I saw him, I would probably believe and worship Him. If an alien came down from outer space and walked over and shook my hand, I would probably believe anything he told me also. But I have never had anything like that happen to me, so I personally choose to believe in the Higher Being I choose to believe, and nobody can force me to do otherwise. That makes me a target to Islamic extremist, and that is why I detest Islamic extremeism, and the Islamic religion. If you don't believe in my Higher Being, does that mean that I have a right to take your life? Would I like the Pope telling me what I can and can't do? Christianity promotes self rule, taking responsibility for one actions. Islam promotes dictators who tell you what to do, and promotes death for anyone who disobeys, no forgivness, no mercy. No thanks!!!!!!
