I also cannot get the little speaker to appear in the bottom right corner next to the clock. WMP is not muted.

You might not have the sound enabled on your sound (audio) card.

I'm assuming you already checked the basic stuff like making sure your speakers are connected correctly to your computer.

Make sure your computer hasn't muted the sound. To check this double-click on the speaker icon in the system tray (The system tray is where the clock is located on your computer). Uncheck all the muted boxes.

or try this:

Update the sound drivers, and remove the sound card reboot. Replace the sound card and boot up again. With luck Windows will detect it as New Hardware and install the appropriate driver. You can then download and install any Sound card Driver update.

WMP is crap
go Quicktime or RealPlayer
otherwise check all your settings
have you switched on your speakers?

Ya, there's that... or you may have a weird virus. That happened to me. Every other media player worked except WMP.

Its hard to tell at first glance if WMP is muted, make sure its not.

go to your control panel/sounds and audio devices / click on Audio tab/recording control / then click on properties, make sure all thoes are toggled on and working properly.
