Why do people ask you to vote their answer as the best? Isn't that up to you to decide? I think it's funny they ask you to vote their answer as the best especially when it contains wrong information. Anyway, correction to previous answer, the telnet port is TCP port 23, while the SMTP port is TCP port 25. When you just type "telnet hostname" then it talks to the telnet program on the destination machine on port 23. But if you say "telnet hostname 25" then it talks to the SMTP daemon on the destination machine on port 25. From there, you can give your HELO, MAIL FROM, RCPT TO, DATA commands, etc. For the SMTP protocol commands, check out the official RFC here: http://www.ietf.org/rfc/rfc2821.txt
