i was around 5 when my parents told me about santa, i actually found it out on my own during christmas dinner. santa came to drop off gifts and i noticed that santa's shoes looked alot like my uncle jonny's so i blurted out "why is santa wearing uncle jonny's shoes?!) my parents being mortified took me in another room and had the "talk" with me.
i don't really remember this too well but my parents make sure they bring it up every year at christmas time!

This is all so sad. All these stories of disappointed kids. I was never taught that there was a Santa. I knew my gifts came from family and friends. Why do parents lie to children about those things, but then if a child lies to the parents, they are in big trouble. It seems that the grown-ups set a double standard for themselves. And then to believe in Santa and not get what you want or someone else got more even though that child had been naughty all year long, while you had been trying your best to be nice. And they wonder whats wrong with the world today. There's no truth!!!!!

I had a lot of fun researching this historical data and the myths about Santa Claus. My kids are more fascinated by what I found than by the cheap version most parents put on their children. So, to answer your question, they've known the tragic truth about Santa since the first Christmas they can remember.

I never actually had that conversation. I figured it out when my last baby-tooth fell out. It was the middle of the night and I washed it and put it under my pillow. In the morning it was still there. I told my mom that the tooth fairy hadn't shown up. My mom reached into her purse, and handed me a few bucks. In that instant I realized what had been happening with the Tooth Fairy, the Easter Bunny, and Santa Clause. Of course I didn't say so until after Christmas. I'm not stupid.

My parents never had the "talk" with me, I never did believed in Santa! In fact, I remember going Christmas shopping with my Mom for as long as I can remember! My kids (9 & 6) still believe in those type of things, or if they don't, they do a good job of pretending! One time I forgot to "play" tooth fairy with my son and he was really disappointed, so I called the "elf remmitance center" (who was my sister) and I let them have it!! The money was promtly there the next morning with a formal letter of apoligy signed by the Tooth fairy herself (also my sister!) and my sister later, recevied a gift certificate to a spa from the Tooth Fairy. That was the most expencive tooth I ever bought!
