Definitely use Hewlett-Packard. Of all the printers I have bought they've never let me down and any other brand has been a sheer disappointment, not to mention the fact they're fast, quiet and economical.
Unlike Canon, HP replace the printhead along with the ink so every time you get a new cartridge, you can be certain you won't have poor quality and 4,800 DPI on an HP means 4,800!
Maybe Lexmark or Dell, but if you want something affordable, economical, quiet, fast, sleek, compatible and quality I would not go past an HP-PSC. With an integrated printer, scanner and photocopier along with card-readers (if you buy the more expensive models) you get it all for an extremely low price.
Hewlett-Packard mean low price - high quality.

Since Lexmark users complain a lot about ink problems you may want to stick with HP. For cheap cartridge cost, you might look into the HP 5440 deskjet printer (around $70) or if you would also like copy and scan functions, give the HP 1510 AIO a try. For both of these printers, the black and color ink cartridges purchased together are about $30 and for lower end usage will last a while.

It depends, for color printing, I'm not sure, I'll let someone else answer. For black and white/document printing, the Samsung ML-2010 laser printer is a great value. It's only 49.99 after rebate.

Lexmark would be worth a look, plus you can get those cheaper ink refills now anyhow.($9.95)
What you need to know though is will it do what you want.
