Start (as I did) by reading "The Prince" by Machiavelli. There's more to politics than what he wrote, but his work was a turning point on the topic.
Today, I am completing my Masters in poli-sci, and love it.
Politics comes into play in almost every human interaction,it's not limited to government. You'll know what I mean, the more you read about it. Just read anything on politics, read books, or check out websites that say an introduction to politics.
Good Luck,
Carlos

Study the Mafia... that is the best way to understand how global, national and many times local politics work.
Also, read some interesting stuff on www.commondreams.org which compiles news stories of the day that matter to your life.

watch the news every day... several different versions would be great... don't make your mind up until you read several different stories on subjects from different points of view... listen to what the news says... if there is something you don't understand, look it up and learn about it... before long you'll have most things down pretty good

Life will teach you that politics are lies, deception and self agendas. This is sad but true.
