I have always heard that if you let you baby "stand" or put pressure on their legs to soon that it will make them bow-legged...Is this a myth or truth....My daughter is 5 months old and loves to be held up in a stand positions..she already can roll over on her own and sit up by herself a little...Do you think I am hurting her by letting her "stand"??

My mother-n-law keeps telling me that I am going to hurt my daughter if I keep letting her "stand" also...but my doc also said that she should be putting some pressure on her legs at this age...She has been doing it for months...Thanks for your input!!! I feel better!

Oh, some mother-in-laws can be so difficult!
My daughter who is 11 yrs old used to love to stand when she was a baby and she developed these beautiful calf muscles pretty young and now my 3 month old does it.
Neither of them like (liked, in my daughter's case) to be cradled, either, they like being up-right to be able to see what's going on and i caught a lot of flack for that when my daughter was a baby and not so much now with my son.
Do you have a Bouncer? Graco has a great one! It's like a swing that you hang on the door frame but the baby's feet should touch the floor. It hangs by a coil so that the baby can bounce up and down w/o you having to hold her. My son LOVES it and he gets a lot of exercise that way. My daughter enjoyed her's, too, but back ten it was a "Johnny Jump-Up".
Best of luck to you!

Four years ago my mother-in-law said the same thing, I knew it was not true but to make my husband relax I asked the pediatrician. He told us that it is an old wives tale from back when babies were on pablum and not eating any fruit, because it is the vitamin deficiency that caused babies in those days to get bow-legs. So the answer is that it is not true. My son is 4 and straight- legged, and he was an early assisted stander.

I think that it's genetic. I know a family who has 3 little girls and all three of them had bow-legs when they were babies, but now they don't. So even if your baby does get bow-legs, at least be comforted knowing that they'll straighten out. Just don't let her ride any bulls.

Letting your baby stand does not make your baby go bow-legged. When I took my son to his four month check up his pediatrician told me that is all a myth. If your child is going to bow-legged it will just happen

"Let her stand all she wants." That is completlly normal, she's just making sure her legs are going to by strong enough for her little active-self. As she grows her legs will be beutiful, so don't worry, I know what I'm saying, I have 5 beutiful childeren and they are all healthy and there legs aren't bowed. Your mother-in-law is just being a mother-in-law. You raise your daughter your way. Listen to what pepole have to say, but do things your way. It sounds like your doing a great job. keep it up..

I think its a load of bull.
My daughter is 2 now and she doesnt have any problems.
I did speak to the doctor bcos my grandma was saying that shes bowlegged bcos of her standing and stuff but the doctor toldme that when you look at average young kids they all a slightly bowlegged bcos theyr still growing and strengthening.
Its not until they are about school age b4 ther legs start properly straightening.

Both my sons loved to "stand" at around that age. they also adored being put in the jolly jumper and bouncing around for hours. they're 2 and 4 now and both have perfectly straight legs.
maybe in your mothers day this was frowned upon, but things change! back in the 1500's they used to wrap the baby onto a board for most of the day to make sure it had a straight back!.
