Is it better to give a baby herbal cough mixture (for example) or a proper pharmacy variety. I think that if I give a baby one from the pharmacy, if he/she has reaction at least the doctors will know exactly what ingredients are in it and what the ingredients do and how/if they can can counteract the problem, whereas with herbal/homeopathic varieties if something goes wrong (which it could) there are a lot of strange herbs and things in herbal medicine that doctors may not have any knowledge of.

I agree that you should use over the counter meds rather than natural ones. Pharmacy medicines have been tested under strict guidelines to ensure they are safe. Not all natural medicines are put to the same tests!!

First of all, you should never give *any* medication to a baby without talking to a doctor. Then your doctor will let you know what, if anything, to use.

Yes, herbal remedies can have some nasty side effects sometimes (most commonly allergic reaction). Homeopathic remedies won't have side effects (by definition), but you need to really know what you're doing to use them. When you are giving it to a baby, in particular, talk to a homeopath before using!!! The potential side effects of allopathic medication are even more than either of these.

You don't necessarily need to *see* a doctor before giving over-the-counter medication, but you do need to at least speak to your pediatrician by phone.

Sounds like good reasoning to me. I grew up with my mom using tylenol for kids, and other pharmacy/over the counter brands. So I do the same with my kids.

While homeopathic can be a good way to go, you really need to know your stuff too. Not just the doc. I don't think herbal /homeopathic routes are good for people who are not knowledgeable in it.

Study up on it yourself before you introduce it to your family.

you = general you... not YOU specifically.

I personally stick to over the counter brands for the same reasoning you mentioned. But do be careful to dose according to age/weight for your baby. Infants under 6 months should not have cold medicine.

I also was told by my pediatrician to go more by weight than age on medicine. IE- some say 2-6 years etc. if your child is barely 2 it is best to go with the lower dose before that age. etc. If that makes sense. HTH>

Herbal remedies are not regulated by the FDA, therefore, you cannot tell how much to give to a child. I would stick with the pharmacy medications. These are regulated and labeled with proper dosages.
