Get some plug-in ultrasonic deterrents. They make a high pitch sound that rodents can't stand.

The best way of getting rid of rats without killing them is to have a cat in your home , even if it is just a kitty. You see the rats will detect the smell of your new resident and take on new avenues very quickly. I know because my wife's family has years of experience with it - (cats) and life around them. If you do not want to adopt a new pet, you can borrow one from a friend for a few days, and see the miracle start to happen.

Unfortunately that is the only way to get rid of rats, killing them. But look on the bright side, you are doing the ecosphere a solid. Those rats would not even be here in America had humans not carried them with them, and they would not be alive without all of our waste to feed on. So you are actually helping the situation by killing them.

Rats, like other animals (IE Dogs and skunks) have a heightened sense of smell. Get some moth balls and put them where the critter likes to hide.
My wife and I had a skunk problem and this was the best solution... that and my .22 rifle. Once we put them down, we noticed the mice stopped coming around.
Though, 5 lbs of moth balls under the house and in the ventilation system almost drove us out... but it was better than skunks fighting for food under our bedroom :)
Also, cats are really handy. If you acquire a kingsnake, those are good critter eaters.

Get a cage that can only be opened by pushing the door and put cheese inside of it. When the rat gets in the cage, it cannot get out. Once you find the rat, you can let it out in a place where it will not bother you again.

Rats are the most vile vermin there is. The diseases they carry are the worlds worst. Why would you not kill them? You want to trap them live end let them go so they can breed and spread more? This to me isn't a good idea. They should be eliminated for health and safety. There is no good reason not to kill them.

For either kill or capture; dont touch them with a bare hand, the fleas can jump on you. I use throwaway latex gloves inside of plastic bags. What are you going to do with a live rat?

There are traps you can get. Check google for rat traps.
Rats spread disease so it really is better to exterminate them.
