Were her periods regular before going on the pill? If they weren't regular before she started the pill, they probably won't be regular after she stops it. She would need to see a gynecologist to see what was causing the irregular periods.

Some women actually do stop menstruating while they're on the pill. This is because one of the ways the pill prevents pregnancy is to make the endometrial lining too thin to support pregnancy. In some women, it can get so thin that they no longer have a period--mine has almost stopped after more than two years on the pill and my doctor says that's completely normal. It can also take a little while for the body to return to normal after going off the pill. She shouldn't hesitate to call a doctor any time she's concerned, but most likely this is normal.

The pill does not cause infertility (see all three links below). Instead, the pill can mask underlying fertility problems. It is also well known that older women may have more difficulty conceiving than younger women, so staying on the pill for a long time may simply mean that when a woman starts trying to conceive, her age can present a problem--not the fact that she took the pill. I have only 3-4 periods a year due to an endocrine and reproductive system disorder called polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). However, while taking the pill I have perfectly regular periods every month. When I stop taking the pill, I'll also stop having regular periods if I don't take other medications to fix the underlying hormonal and insulin problems that contribute to PCOS. I am simply taking the pill to prevent pregnancy and to alleviate some symptoms of PCOS--the pill just makes me seem to have a regular cycle when in reality, I don't.

If she was on the Pill, that was presumably the cause. It can take several months up to a full year for a woman's cycles to return to normal. In some cases, hormonal birth control causes permanent infertility.

Hormonal changes will sometimes cause someone to skip her period. If it has been that long she needs to call her doc to adjust her dosage.
