My dad owns and opperates a small construction business. He builds stair cases, mantles, and installs trim. Up to this point he has gotten most of his business by word of mouth, but that isn't working so great any more. Any suggestions for good ways to advertise?

Try one or more of the following:

Put Ad banners at the relevant construction material companies and stores.

Send mailers and representatives to the bigger construction companies for sub-contracts for the job.

Advertise through the cable/TV network

Get in touch with other repair and maintenance contractors for the job - sub contracting.

Put up periodical banners/ ads/ leaflets/ mailers to relatively old construction area need repairs/ replacements/renewals.

Be a member of the relevant trade asociation in your area of operation and get yourself listed for the work / enquiries.

Forward offers of commission to the agents securing you work / jobs.

Flyers, posters, ads in local newspaper, website, network with other people in construction business that specialize in work that is complimentary ie: painters, roofers, dry wall, etc.

Contact general contractors and home builders and let them know about your company and what you do. Ask to submit bids on jobs.

Search contractor's publications that are asking for bids.

Go to tradeshows and set up a booth with pictures of your work. Hand out flyers, business cards, promo items with your company name. Have a prize drawing.

Join construction related organizations.

Read trade journals.

Good luck....hope this helps....continue to work on that word of mouth....it'll get better.

Change your name? Just a thought as you pointed out that word of mouth is speaking less. Are you local? It might be that you are out working yourself by doing such good work? Nothing wrong with that in my book. Pick a name that ROCKS!

He needs to contact home builders. Show them examples of his work, and ask to become a sub-contractor for them.

Could also contact Interior Design or Architeck firms (I am terrible speller) and do the same thing.
