well there are definitely cultural differences between all countries...the japanese and chinese are quite similar in language and culture because the japanese took the chinese culture hundreds...even thousands of years back but koreans may be different because of what is cool now in korea...you might have noticed that out of all the asian countries, the korean teenagers smoke more, drink more, and they usually try to act more...gangster and highlight their hair and act rude...but I have a lot of korean friends...and many of them are my best friends and they are very different from those koreans that I have just described. it may also be the family's influences and not just the cultureal differences

Japan has a very rigid society, and women in particular are taught to act quite demurely. Traditionally, Korea has had a fairly structured social system as well, but not nearly so much as Japan. Also, Japan's social structure is not changing as much as Korea's is. Japanese who live abroad for extended periods of time and then return are generally relegated to a life as "outsiders", while Korean society has had to re-incorporate the large numbers of its people who have lived abroad and returned.
Also, the opportunities for practicing English are much different in each country. A large percentage of Koreans live overseas, and there they can achieve a much higher level of fluency in English.
Also, Japanese tend to stay around other Japanese people when abroad, seeking out the community, so they may be quite demure when interacting with non-Japanese, even in a foreign setting.

Of course it's cultural!!
It's the same as the way Americans and Britons are different!! Generally speaking, Americans are more outgoing and talkative than Britons, with Britons being more reserved.
There are always exceptions to the rule though, and because the world is much smaller than it used to be people pick up habits from other nations! But it sounds like your friends have absorbed their own cultures very well, and although they'll pick up habits from you, and from each other, they won't change a lot.

Obviously it's not genetic differences, OF COURSE it's cultural differences! Cultural differences aside, there is a long history of controvery between the two nations which might subtly affect the way your housemates act towards/around one another.

Why are Canadians supposed to be reserved, helpful....and so on and Americans considered boisterous, loud, obnoxious...etc.
We're only a line apart on a map and we have different ways - just how wrong are the stereotypes?
