It address the question of what price would people pay for the perfect society. Would you be willing to sacrife a loved one, friend, neighbor, whatever to keep a perfect society.

if you are talking about the short story by Shirley Jackson, Its a story that is what it is, it was very controversial in her day ppl she got strange letters of ppl who wanted to watch the ceremony and where it was located is one of my favorite's by her is "the Witch"
but u did not want to here that it is a story which picks a sacrificial victim probably as some sort of ritual that had some sort of meaning but know forgotten to appease something in there past -so it is down every year. Its a creepy story and very hard to get meaning out of it, it was written during a volatile time in American history. I think it is about unnecessary violence or maybe following others blindly- it reminds me of the book the Handmaids Tale in which something like this happened sort of similar- they had to kill the guilty person so everyone had to participate

The story explains the essential value of sacrifice to maintain human group cohesion, even when the original purpose is lost.

Worst short story ever. I think its just trying to say that everyone has a barbaric part inside you.
