I am a truck driver of 19 years, Here is the difference

CDL A any combination of vehicles with carries a weight
classification as set forth by each state.
a tractor trailer, or a dump truck pulling a large trailer.
The key is, if it pivots in the middle, it is class A
NOTE you must have a class A if u drive a road tractor
without its trailer simply because it has a fifth wheel.

CDL B any SINGLE vehicle that carries a weight classification
set forth by your state

The difference between class a and b is class A is for pulling trailers that can carry a weight of 10,000 or more. Class b is driving a rig with no trailer or that will pull less than 10,000, it is that way in Ok anyway.

Each state has their own license classifications, but usually an "A" license is for tractor trailers, and a "B" is for straight trucks over 26,001 lbs GVWR. .
