Depends on the country. You can go to the UK and most of Europe with only a passport. I was even in Czechoslovakia with only a passport.
Usually in Russia or ex Russian block countries you must have a visa!
Japan only requires a passport.

Canadians can stay in Japan for up to 3 months without getting a visa. If you plan on staying longer you'll need one. You shouldn't have to be a certain age to travel. You'll need a passport, and thats basically it. Check with your country's customs office.

Every Country have different Immigration Laws I think you should contact the Japanese Consulate in Canada before you leave
