Applied for a job recently and think my present employer will be upset if they're contacted about my work history. I want to better prepare myself in case they do contact my job with what exactly they asked.. Maybe it can pass as a credit check or something?

I work in HR. The only legal questions they are allowed to ask is start and end date, all positions filled during their time there, and eligible for rehire? yes or no.

That's it...legally speaking. Unless you have proof of the bad comments being made against you...not much you can do if they say less than complimentary things.

legally there are only a few questions that are asked, job position, performance, and any problems, plus rehireable or not.

What they CAN ask and what they DO ask are two different things.

I understand they can ask if and when you worked for them and if you could be rehired.

They can only ask how long you have worked and the dates. Thats all.
