I once read an astounding account of how, in the last days of WWII, a small band of Nazi youth stopped the advance of the Soviet army into Berlin.

Does anyone know any book or magazine article that recounts this event? Do you know any more details.

Someone must have written a book about this.... right? Anyone know of any titles?

To the first two respondants, I think you may be mistaken. I clearly remember the account I read saying that these teenagers and children kept the Soviets from advancing for days.

If you google "Volkstrum", you'll be able ot find out more info about the battle of Berlin and how some Nazi Youth did indeed fight the Soviets to a standstill.

The History Channel has done documentaries on this. Yes it is true that the Nazi Youth stopped the Soviet advance into Berlin. Obviously, they did not stop it for good, but they made the taking of Berlin more costly than it might otherwise have been. The papers which are being released from the KGB Archives will also show this as well. The papers from the field commanders of the day detail what was done from the Soviets point of view. It is good reading.

The city of Berlin was defenseless because what was left of the troops was scattered all over Europe. Hitler who was totally mad by this time, called on the children trained as Hitler Youth to defend the city. These children were massacred. The Soviets easily took the city and Hitler, coward that he was, committed suicide.

Well, they did try to defend Berlin, but did not stop the advance of the Red Army. They were obliterated, pretty much like shooting fish in a barrel.
