Interesting question. I don't think it can be totally prevented, but a well-trained counselor will at least be aware

First thing is that there is some training but for the most part it is a simple decision as you are there to hear the client and aid in their problem and usually the problems are not culturally based but even when they are you just simply know that culture and beleif systems have universally been different and the common groud that everyperson has is knowing that their cultural and beleif system is right for them and not necesscarily you thus remove the differences by focussing on the topic at hand not the values you beleive in.

solving someones problems can be handled in a professional manner with out bringing up culture. if the counselor feels the need to impose his culture on others, it shows that the counselor is not trying to really impose their beliefs on their clients but, maybe trying to validate them. i would advise the counselor to seek counseling & i am not trying to be funny. you would be supprised if you don't know already how many theripist see theripist.

hope this helps

find a counselor who has similar cultural values as you. You have the right to ask about a counselors value system. You are paying them remember?

If the counselor thinks his cultural values are no good and not worth sharing and encouraging others to take up, perhaps he is the one in need of counseling.

Objectivity... Not Subjectivity.

We are trained to remain objective. Don't get me wrong, I have my beliefs, but I don't impose them on others. I offer them in a format like this. During a counselling session I remain objective provided that the cultural value isn't illegal.

School teachers alike must be careful not to intrude on anothers belief system. A professional counselor usually accepts you on a bell curve type category and is usually not interested in your religious beliefs unless you may have a compulsion type disorder. A school teacher must enforce some type of moral standard described by his or her superiors. Most professions have a code of ethics.

It's a choice and a good counselor is hard to find. I have had two good counselors in my entire life. Our values are similar. I think that is important to me.
