I hear that all the time, but I hear it also about Bugs Bunny, Waldo, the Teletubbies, and even pokemon characters. I think it is mostly a case of paranoid (or homophobic) people chasing after shadows. They see gay innuendos in cartoons because they WANT to see them, they believe they are there, so of course (in their minds) they must be there.
However, as a regular watcher of Spongebob, and having seen the movie several times, I can understand why some people suspect Mr. Squarepants is a front for the G/L/B/T communities. I recall different scenes, that taken out of context, or misinterpreted, could very well give some viewers the idea that Spongebob is either gay, or pro-gay rights.
I really dont think it is true though, look at the target audience for Spongebob Squarepants- children in the 7 -12 age group. Most kids in that age group are too young to understand what gay is, what it means to be gay, or the cultural taboos associated with homosexuality in American society.

This arises from the fact that many cartoon characters, including SpongeBob, were going to be featured in an updated version of "We Are family" which was sponsored by a gay tolerance group.
Reverend Dobson felt that these characters were being used to promote a homosexual agenda, but the Reverend did not make himself clear, so it hit the airwaves that SpongeBob promoted a gay lifestyle.
You can view his comments at focusonthefamily.com
Personally, I think the Reverend is full of holy crap.

Haha, people who think that are reading WAY too much into things. It's just a cartoon! It's like the people who went crazy and wrote so many books and documentaries discounting the claims made in The Da Vinci Code, which is FICTION anyways!
It seems as though these people don't have enough to complain about and crusade against, so they just make things up.

People like making fun of spongebob... Most likely older people... Because they grew out of it... Kinda like Barney, so to say....
And some people may think that a little yellow sponge running around yelling "I'M A GOOFY GOOBER!!" is really a sign of homosexuality.... It's called making fun of things you don't like....
